Evesham Police promote safety during December’s National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

Residents who see impaired drivers on the road are asked to contact law enforcement.

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, and the Evesham Township Police Department is reminding residents to drive safe.

Police ask residents to always be sure and prevent others they know that have been drinking from getting behind the wheel.

Residents who see an impaired driver on the road are asked to contact law enforcement. Such actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life. Police say families play an essential part in stopping impaired driving.

According to the Evesham, Police, during the 2012 holiday period (Dec. 12 through Dec. 31), there were 1,698 people killed in crashes on the nation’s roads, and almost one-third (31 percent) of those fatalities were in drunk-driving crashes. On Christmas Day, 26 people were killed by drunk drivers.

During the entire month of December 2012, a 830 people lost their lives in crashes involving a drunk driver. In an average year, 30 million Americans drive drunk, and 10 million Americans drive impaired by illicit drugs.

A 2010 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) revealed that 13.2 percent of all people aged 16 or older drove under the influence of alcohol and 4.3 percent drove under the influence of illicit drugs during the past year.

Residents are asked to always drive safe.
