The meeting (chapter activities) starts at 7:30 p.m. and is held at the First Baptist Church, 19 West Main Street, Moorestown (enter via side door closest to municipal parking lot and Carl’s Shoe Store).

Dee Zaniewski’s dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail began more than 10 years ago, after reading ‘A Walk in the Woods’ by Bill Bryson. She had always loved the outdoors, camping and walking, so she started collecting additional books on women hiking. In 2016 she decided that it was the right time to make her dream come true, or as others might put it, cross something off her bucket list.

The six-month trip was planned, equipment updated, replaced or bought new, mail drop lists written, workshops attended and journal page set up. Dee left home on March 6 and rode the ‘Midnight train to Georgia’ arriving in Gainesville, GA the morning of March 7. At Amicalola State Park she signed in and, after 162 days, she had hiked 2189.1 miles and ended up on Mt. Katahdin, Maine.

Her presentation will include stories and events along the way, the emotional and physical ups and downs, the people met, friendships found, the trail magic received and, most of all, the confirmation of the possibility of women solo (thru-) hiking the Appalachian Trail and succeeding.

Dee will also bring a list of books people might want to read, as well as some other information that could be helpful to someone interested in through hiking the Appalachian Trail. In addition, she will bring along some of her equipment, to better demonstrate her journey.
