High school sports roundup: East defeats West in field hockey, Cherry Hill East girls’ tennis advances in playoffs

In other action, Cherry Hill East girls’ volleyball and Cherry Hill West girls’ soccer both won on Monday.

The Cherry Hill East field hockey team had a big second half against crosstown rival Cherry Hill West on Monday, scoring three goals in the final period to defeat the Lions, 3–0.

Chloe Garber, Shannon Reiss and Carli Ciocco all scored to help Cherry Hill East to their fourth win of the season. Gabi Valladares earned the shutout for the Cougars. Cherry Hill West goalkeeper Abby Spencer kept the game close for the Lions with 15 saves.

Cherry Hill East’s next game will be on Thursday night at Lenape High School. Cherry Hill West is also back in action on Thursday night as they host Camden Catholic under the lights at 6 p.m.

Cherry Hill East girls’ tennis advances to semifinals of South Jersey Group IV tournament

The No. 1 seeded Cherry Hill East girls’ tennis team officially kicked off its postseason run on Monday as they swept past No. 9 Eastern Regional High School, 5–0, in the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Group IV tournament.

The Cougars dropped only one set at second doubles. The three singles players, Stephanie Yanosov, Pallavi Goculdas and Natalie Yanosov, lost only three games the entire afternoon.

The Cougars will next host No. 4 Shawnee High School on Friday in the South Jersey Group IV semifinals. If Cherry Hill East wins, they will then host either Egg Harbor Twp. High School or Lenape High School in the sectional final next Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Cherry Hill East girls’ volleyball takes down Paul VI

Cherry Hill East girls’ volleyball continued its strong play in conference games on Monday as they defeated a strong Paul VI High School team, 2–0, on the road. Kelly Babitz had 11 kills and four digs to lead the Cougars. Kim Longa tallied seven digs and Star Beasley had three blocks.

The Cougars return to the court on Thursday as they visit Cherokee High School.

Cherry Hill West girls’ soccer takes down Winslow

Cherry Hill West girls’ soccer snagged their fourth win of the season on Monday as they defeated Winslow Township High School, 1–0, at home. Kelsey Clauss scored the only goal of the game for the Lions. Natalie Eberhardt was strong in net as she earned the shutout.

Girls’ soccer will host Seneca High School in their next game on Thursday afternoon.

Cherry Hill East boys’ soccer falls short against Cherokee

The Cherry Hill East boys’ soccer team lost another tight, one-goal game as they fell to Cherokee, 1–0, on Monday. Colin O’Donnell made six saves for the Cougars in the loss. Cherokee’s Brendan Connolly scored the game’s only goal.

The Cougars’ next game will be at home against Camden Catholic High School on Friday. The game will be played at the football stadium at the high school.
