Three members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Marlton, Flotilla 1808 recently received Meritorious Service Awards for their support of Coast Guard activities.

Russ Rosenzweig and Michael Slepian were recognized for their participation in a program in which they qualified as watchstanders on the 87 foot Coast Guard Cutters stationed at Cape May.

“We trained with help from regular Coast Guard crew and fellow auxiliarists, to become familiar with all systems on board the Cutter,” Rosenzweig said. “This enables us to stand watch when the Cutter is in port and we can actually relieve the regular crew members so they can pursue other activities.”

For his achievements assisting the Coast Guard in “Helo-Ops”, which saves taxpayer money by relying on trained Auxiliarists and their boats to act as vessels in distress, Auxiliarist Mark Rubino said, “It is quite exciting to have a Coast Guard Rescue helicopter hovering over you! And we are helping Coast Guard rescue pilots and crews practice life-saving skills, using boats manned by Auxiliary crews.”

All three men received the commendations in early September at the Coast Guard, Fifth Northern Region Fall conference, and are now eligible to wear a special commendation ribbon on their Coast Guard Auxiliary uniforms.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, founded in 1939, is the uniformed, volunteer arm of the United States Coast Guard. Auxiliary duties include: promote and improve recreational boating safety, provide trained crews and facilities to augment the Coast Guard and enhance safety and security of our ports, waterways, and coastal regions and support Coast Guard operational, administrative, and logistical requirements.
