Letters from the Library: September 2016

Where did the summer go? School is open again and the streets are full of yellow school buses. In Medford Lakes, be sure to watch out for the children who walk or bike to school daily.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning. A public library card is a ticket to free educational resources and activities such as homework help, digital workshops for all ages, STEAM programs/activities, book clubs, family storytimes and game nights.

On Sept. 22 at 6 p.m., will at least six of you join us to solve a murder mystery at the Pinelands Library for “Murder in the Distillery,” an audience participation WhoDunnit? Maxi and Demi Liter, owners of the Andalusia Foundation vineyard, host regular wine tastings at their estate. Unfortunately for the guests this evening, the vintage had more body than they were expecting: Max Liter has been discovered dead in a vat of wine.

For the younger set of the young at heart, “The Angry Birds Movie” will be shown on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. As always, feel free to wear your jammies and bring your blankie and snacks.

We are again participating in the National Costume Swap Day on Oct. 8. From now through Swap Day, you can recycle those gently used costumes appropriate for infants through teens. For every costume donated, you will receive a ticket that can be used for another costume on Swap Day.

Fall has brought the return of our library reading raffles and the wonderful prizes offered to those busy readers. There were two backpacks full of school supplies for the children, and there is a basket of office supplies with a gift certificate sponsored by Lakes Office Supply.

Until next time, keep turning those pages! Or logging in!
