Letter from the Library

Dear Friends,

Here we are in the midst of the dog days of summer. That term originated in the Mediterranean countries and refers to the hottest days of the summer in July and early August. The sultry weather often made people ill and was blamed on Sirius, the Dog Star. During this time period, Sirius rises about the same time as the sum and was believed to add to the heat of the day. If you are looking for a place to cool off, you can always visit the library.

The last two installments of our Summer Music program are coming up. Little Summer Music is an age appropriate introduction for children 6 to 12 to learn more about the instrument of the week through seeing, touching and actually playing it. August first at 1 will be Fun with Piano for children ages 6 and up, and August 8 at the same time will be Fun with Singing for children ages 7 and up.

Our summer Family Movie Nights continue on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. On August second we will be showing “Norm of the North”. Norm, a polar bear, and his lemming friends take on the Big Apple in this animated comedy. On August 9, you can view “Pan”. If you ever wondered about the origins of Peter Pan, this movie is a must.

If your teens ages 13 to 17 are interested in engineering or architecture or if they build or collect figurines, we are offering 3D Modeling on August 3 and 10 at 6pm. Learn the basics, design an original creation and bring your creation to life using a MakerBot 3D printer. Remember, you must attend the first session to participate in the second.

The summer reading program is ongoing and there is still time to join and win prizes based on the number of books read or the hours spent reading. Different age groups have different criteria.

As always we still have our in library book sales.

Until next time, keep turning those pages or logging in.
