Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of thousands of people in this country every year and it doesn’t just happen in the winter. Learn something new this summer and instead of watching the latest super hero movie learn how to be one. Learn how to save a life.

To do so, Shamong Emergency Medical Services is offering a free community cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) program to township residents that will include the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.

There will be four classes to choose from, but to those interested only need to attend one. They will be held at the Squad building located at 40 Willow Grove Road on Saturday, July 16, Wednesday, July 27, Saturday, August 20 and Wednesday August 24. Saturday classes will be from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesday classes will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This program will teach adult, child and pediatric CPR including AED use, rescue breathing and what to do when someone is chocking. In order to maintain a good student to instructor ratio space is limited.

To obtain a course completion card along with the skills there will be a required $25 fee that will then be paid to the American Heart Association.

Top 10 Reasons to learn CPR:

  1. Over 200,000 people die each year of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
  2. 50,000 of those could be prevented
  3. For every minute that CPR & AED are not available survival rates drop 10%
  4. Once the heart stops beating brain death starts in 4 to 6 minutes if CPR is not done
  5. You might save someone’s life
  6. That life may be someone you love. 80% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at home
  7. You will know exactly what to do
  8. Learn how to use cool new technology. Instruction in using an AED will be provided
  9. Set a good example for your kids
  10. Your friends and family will think you’re a hero

It can take emergency personnel precious minutes to arrive on the scene, and for every minute without CPR a sudden cardiac arrest victim’s chance of surviving drops. 80% of cardiac arrests happen in the home and although the Squad aims to get there as soon as possible, the sooner CPR can be started the better the chances are for an improved outcome.
