Aspiring artists ages 16 to 22 are invited to polish their skills during a special eight-week series of free art classes being offered at the Burlington County Library in Westampton beginning July 6.

Participants will learn the basics about comics, figure drawing, and color theory during separate courses with local artist, Tiffany Case. Classes, which will last almost two hours each, will run through Aug. 29. Most materials will be provided (although some specific supplies will be required for each workshop). Please register for each course individually. Seating is limited.

The schedule includes:

Color Theory — Wednesdays, July, 6, 13, 20, 27, and Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24–1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Participants will receive a crash-course in color theory covering everything from learning the color wheel, the difference between a hue and a shade, how to mix skin tones, and even how to mix colors digitally. They will also apply their skills to observational drawings, experimenting with mixed media, and a final finished piece using a limited palette. (Please note: each student is required to bring a 9 inch by 12 inch mixed media drawing pad.)

Intro to Comics — Mondays, July 11, 18, 25, and Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29–1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Participants will be given an entertaining crash-course in comics and cartooning history as well as the theory of visual narratives. Geared toward students who want to explore careers in related fields and expand their knowledge of the art form, the course will focus on crafting a two to three-page story arc and turning it into a comic. (Please note: each student is required to bring a 9 inch by 12 inch mixed media drawing pad.)

Intro to Figure Drawing — Mondays, July, 11, 18, 25, and Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29–3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. — Drawing the human body correctly is an important aspect of visual art. During this class, basic human proportions, facial features, and muscular structure will be broken down to deconstruct their components and reconstruct them in a figurative piece. The course will focus on drawing a complete skeleton, musculature, and then a complete figure. (Please note: each student is required to bring an 11 inch by 14 inch cool gray toned sketchbook, 24 sheets.)

The Burlington County Library is located at 5 Pioneer Blvd. off Woodlane Road in Westampton. To register, please go to www.bcls.lib.nj.us or call (609) 267–9660.
