NJ Department of Transportation’s reconstruction of Route 70 underway

The first phase of this multi-year project, from mile post 2.55 to mile post 5.33, is expected to be completed in early 2017.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is beginning a maintenance project to improve Route 70 in both directions from mile post 0.0 to mile post 7.6 in the Cherry Hill area this summer. This represents the reconstruction of more than 90 percent of one of the most highly traveled roadways in Camden County.

“Anyone driving on Route 70 in Cherry Hill needs to be aware that the state will closing one lane of traffic during the day and up to two lanes of traffic at night to accommodate this project,” Shin Angulo said. “Please allow yourself extra time when traveling on Route 70, and whenever possible take an alternant route.”

NJDOT will erect signs informing the public of the work. Construction is expected to begin at Haddonfield Road and advance toward the New Jersey Turnpike overpass on Route 70. The project will include milling and paving the road surface and a significant amount of concrete. Lane closures will be limited to off peak times to decrease the impact on drivers.

“Please pay attention to electronic message boards that will be posted in the area notifying you of changes in traffic patterns and lane closures throughout the project,” Shin Angulo said. “Anyone who drives on Route 70 is well aware this work is overdue and needed on this highway. Drivers will be faced with some inconveniences until this work is finished, but the reconstruction will be worth the hassle.”

This $9 million dollar project is divided into two phases. This first phase, from mile post 2.55 to mile post 5.33, is expected to complete in early 2017. The second phase, from mile post 0.00 to mile post 2.55 and mile post 5.33 to mile post 7.6, is expected to be completed next fall.

This work will address some of the worst road surface in the state and significantly improve driving conditions until a $50 million project begins in 2019 that will overhaul the entire stretch of Route 70.
