Moorestown Department of Parks and Rec Column: Summer Fun

As the school year comes to a close, students are busy bringing their academics and activities to a close. Each year there is a chapter that closes and as summer approaches, students are often nostalgic for the year that has almost ended — wishing for “one more time” with their friends before the winds of summer scatter them until they return in the fall.

The Department of Parks & Recreation is pleased to be offering a number of activities and events to “round out” the 2015–2016 school year. This year has been filled with many new programs and activities for our local youth and the department is thrilled to be a part of this young and vibrant community.

For the second year, the Department of Parks & Recreation will host the “Let’s Dance” Spring Fling for special needs youth. This dance will held on Friday, June 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Church Street Recreation Center on the Third Floor. Special needs young adults ages 13 to 21 will be treated to an evening of dancing food and fun, snacks provided by The Corner Bakery. With a full complement of chaperones, these young people can celebrate the end of a successful year with their friends. For more information or to register please visit the Recreation website at www.mooresotwnrec.com and click the Special Needs tab.

The following weekend, the student led Third Floor Café LIVE will host its final jam session and performance also on the Third Floor of the Church Street Recreation Center. This open mic night comes with a long list of talented local performers, who will undoubtedly one day say, “I got my start at The Rec!” For those who missed the February event, the Third Floor Café LIVE hosted nearly 25 performers from acoustic and instrumental to individual vocalists and bands. The talent of our local young people is truly astounding.

The final Third Floor Café LIVE for the 2015–2016 school year will be hosted on Friday, June 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event is open to all Moorestown High School students. Admission to the event is free again, with a requested donation of non-perishable food items for department partner, Live Civilly. As we enter the summer months, the food pantries will still need consistent support — because hunger doesn’t take a vacation. As these performers serenade the end of the school year come enjoy a relaxed evening of good music, fellowship and support of our community.

Help us welcome in summer and celebrate the end of the school year. For more information about these and other department events and programs visit www.moorestownrec.com and view the many programs we offer for all residents.
