This spring, the Department of Parks & Recreation with the Moorestown community, will participate in the Annual Moorestown Day event June 4. This town-wide celebration has something for everyone, starting with the Annual Scott Coffee Memorial Rotary 8K Run, followed by a day-long street fair and the Annual District Art Show which showcases artwork and performance from the many, phenomenally talented students in the Moorestown school district.
The department will take its place in front of Starbuck’s on Main Street, bright and early on Saturday morning. Recreation staff will be on hand to answer questions, help residents register for programs and showcase the variety of programs available to all of our residents. From summer camps and clinics to Fall Programs the recreation department has something for everyone.
Also on Saturday, on the Third Floor of the Church Street Recreation Center, located in the municipal complex between Second and Third Streets, will again open its doors to host the Annual District Art Show, sponsored by MoorArts. This annual showcase features the amazing talents of K-12 students in Moorestown Township Public Schools. Admission to the show is free and light refreshments are available to all who attend. There also will be free children’s face painting and free crafts. The District Art Show is another perfect example of the Department of Parks & Recreation partnerships that exist within Moorestown. Additionally, this year, the District Art Show will feature the 2016 Upcycling Art Challenge, sponsored by the Sustainable Moorestown Creative Arts Committee. This challenge presented to Moorestown High School students will feature upcycling of materials to create unique and interesting projects. The District Art Show will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Building upon recreation philosophy, the District Art Show highlights the importance of recreation in our community. This annual showcase of student art work is one of the most notable, comprehensive displays of youth art in southern New Jersey. The show highlights a variety of work from children of all ages in the visual and performing arts. From the graphic arts and traditional sketching and painting mediums to sculptors and innovative mediums, this art show truly captures the talent of our youth.
The Department of Parks & Recreation ascribes to the broader view of recreation, including those activities in the arts. Defined as “something people to do relax of have fun; activities done for enjoyment.” In keeping with this ideal, the Department of Parks & Recreation maintains a broad spectrum of program offerings and fosters community partnerships to meet these needs of the Moorestown Community.
