The earthquake in Ecuador was devastating to the country, leading one Resurrection Catholic School family to make a request for aide for the country where the parents grew up. Maria Castro and Juan Sebastian Utreras have family still living in Ecuador. Although their family was not directly affected by the earthquake, their country is devastated.

Castro asked RCS principal Sister Lydia if the school could help in any way. Sister Lydia quickly arranged a Donation Dress Down Day on Friday, April 22, where students were permitted to dress down in exchange for donating an item needed in Ecuador.

Along with donations of about $400 in cash, the foyer was bursting with donations of blankets, sheets, towels, tents, baby food, diapers, toilet paper, batteries, flash lights, canned food, trash bags, candles and plastic cutlery. The Utreras-Castros took the cash to Wal-Mart and BJ’s Wholesale, where they purchased additional supplies.

On Saturday, April 23, the family, along with other volunteers, took two full minivans to the Ecuadorian Consulate in Newark. The need in Ecuador continues, so another trip to the consulate may be planned.

Anyone who is interested in donating can email Castro at augus72@hotmail.com.
