The Historical Society of Haddonfield is happy to announce the launch of its first ever children’s book on Sunday, April 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the auditorium at Haddonfield Friends Meeting, 45 Friends Avenue in Haddonfield.
Kim Custer of the Historical Society worked for three years with Haddonfield Middle School teacher Robin Walters, Club Advisor and sixteen members of the Haddonfield Middle School Nature Club to research, write and illustrate the life of Samuel Nicholson Rhoads of Haddonfield, an important naturalist, ornithologist, historian and explorer of the late 19th and early 20th century.
The book will become part of the third grade social studies curriculum in Haddonfield. It is a beautiful, full color look at Samuel’s childhood, work for the Academy of Natural Sciences for whom he collected many important specimens, his adventures in Ecuador, his work as a rare book dealer, his legacy as a founder of many important organizations and his work with James Lane Pennypacker to save Hopkins and Evans Ponds and create what is today the Camden County Park System.
Many of the student authors will be present and available to autograph books. This will be the first opportunity to see and purchase this beautiful children’s book — don’t miss it!
