The Department of Parks and Rec Column

The Recreation Kitchen is really heating up these days — and just in time for the holidays! What better way to ring in the holiday season than with holiday cooking workshops for our youngest chefs?

Two Saturdays in a row, instructors James Hilton and Chris VanSciver will teach fourth to sixth graders the finer points of cookie making with the Holiday Cookie Workshop.

Hilton and VanSciver are accomplished bakers having a combined 25 years in restaurant and bakery experience. Their goal is to educate and inspire young bakers to create and enjoy baking on many levels — to learn baking techniques, to understand the science behind successful baking and to gain valuable skills. These new workshops are an introduction to Cookie Baking.

On Saturday, Dec. 12 and then again on Dec. 19 this two and a half hour workshop will cover the basics of holiday baking including measurements, ratios and proportions. Children will be given hands-on instructions for making cookie favorites. Food prepared will be available to take home and enjoy afterwards.

These specialty classes are the first in a series of one-day workshops designed to intrigue prospective bakers and chefs. Cooking is a life skill that all children should learn, and what better way to start learning than with a fun, holiday themed cookie class? Additional workshops will include things like easy meal preparation, dessert workshops, appetizers and party themes and more. The Recreation Commercial Kitchen is a space to make cooking fun — recreational.

Register now for these fun, one-day workshops that promise to stimulate the senses and motivate even the biggest holiday procrastinator. The Holiday Cookie Workshops will be offered for children grades fourth through sixth on Saturday Dec. 12 and 19 from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Recreation Commercial Kitchen, 3rd Floor. The cost is $30 per student, $50 for non-residents, and the best part? The cookies come home.
