Camden County Animal Shelter expansion promotes adoptions

Camden

The Camden County Freeholder Board has completed a $1.5 million expansion of the Camden County Animal Shelter located at 125 County House Road in Gloucester Township. This new facility will provide more space and running room for cats and dogs and allow the Freeholder Board to increase capacity.

“Every day, dogs and cats are brought to the Camden County Animal Shelter in Gloucester Township where they wait to be adopted,” said Freeholder Michelle Gentek-Mayer. “In order to meet the growing need for space, the Camden County Freeholder Board undertook this expansion to better serve the needs of residents and their new pets.”

The improvements to the shelter include a new adoption wing that serves as the public side of the animal shelter. The expanded facility has a dedicated area where residents can interact and adopt pets. The adoption center has glass-walled acquaintance rooms instead of a traditional shelter setting with animals in cages, to encourage shorter shelter stays for adoptable animals. There is now room for an additional 30 dogs and 50 cats.

“The Freeholder Board has made a commitment to treat homeless animals in a humane manner because we believe it is the right thing to do and we want our public policy to mirror our morals and values as a society,” Gentek-Mayer said.

Camden County is a very animal friendly place. According to the last census, 75 percent of Camden County households include either a dog or a cat.

“We invite you to come and visit the dogs and cats waiting for you at the newly expanded Camden County Animal Shelter,” Gentek-Mayer said. “The happiness that one gets from being greeted at the end of a hard day by your loyal family dog has no equal.”
