Paul V. Fagan Jr. passed away on July 9 at the age of 88. Of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Bridgewater Township, he died peacefully at the Country House in Wilmington, Del. after a long illness.

He was the devoted father of Mary Fagan (Douglas Leonard) of Haddonfield, Peggy Fagan of Ottsville, Pa., Anna (Nancy) Fagan of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, Paul Fagan (Nancy Jones) of Wilmington, Del., and the loving grandfather of Elissa and Grace Leonard, Paul and Alice Fagan, and Dani Manchado Fagan. He was the beloved son of the late Paul and Mary Ann (nee McCormick) Fagan and cherished husband of the late Agatha (nee Vasta).

Born in Newark, Paul grew up on a family farm in Flemington. He attended a one-room elementary and high school during years spanning the Great Depression through the World War II. Upon the end of the war, after over a year of service in the U.S. Navy, Paul earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Seton Hall University and a master’s degree in chemistry from Fordham University. His long career in research and development with the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies produced several patents, and he was awarded the Johnson Medal for Research and Development in 1973. In his free time, Paul entertained friends and family as a self-taught jazz pianist. He also enjoyed painting scenes inspired by his frequent travels. Paul was a congregant of St. Elizabeth Church, and a member of the American Chemical Society.

Family and friends are invited to visitation at Layton Funeral Home, Bedminster Township, on July 14 and Funeral Mass at St. Elizabeth Church, Far Hills, on July 15. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge.
