Camden County Freeholders exploring disaster proclamation as closures continue

Over the last 48 hours Camden County crews continue to cleanup and assess damage from Tuesday night’s super storm. The Freeholder Board has directed the Office of Emergency Management to prepare data for a disaster proclamation for the state to review. A disaster proclamation would authorize the use of state recovery funds in the regions hit by the devastating storm.

“Our professionals are out in the field making a real time assessment of damages with the state police to justify the declaration,” Freeholder Michelle Gentek said. “This storm event was one of the worst in scope and severity for Camden County in modern era and was the catalyst for significant damage to homeowners and businesses.”

The latest update today from Atlantic City Electric was about 41,000 Camden County residents are still without power and PSE&G still has several thousand customers offline. The utility companies have stayed in close contact with the Office of Emergency Management and the Freeholder Board and have committed to having everyone back online by Sunday at the latest.

In addition, the Camden County Park System was heavily affected by the storm and Berlin Park will remain closed for an extended period of time. Heavy tree loss has created hazards within the open space. The southern branch of the Camden County Library System and the Camden County Office of Veteran Affairs still remain closed due to the absence of power in both facilities.

“The Parks Department has been working since the storm ended to clear tons of debris from the 2,200 acres of open space throughout Camden County,” Freeholder Jeffrey Nash said. “Berlin Park was heavily impacted by the violent wind and rain yesterday and will need more additional manpower for total remediation.”

If the storm took out electricity, residents should remember to call an outage in immediately to their utility company so they can identify the location and coordinate crews to restore power. Below are numbers and contact info for the two power providers and the two gas utilities in Camden County:
