Mark Cowell named interim superintendent of Cherry Hill Public Schools

The Cherry Hill Board of Education has hired an interim superintendent to lead the district into the start of the 2015–16 school year.

The board approved Mark Cowell as the district’s interim superintendent, effective July 1. He will take over the position upon the resignation of superintendent Maureen Reusche, who will leave the district on June 30.
Cowell comes to Cherry Hill with more than 40 years of experience in education, working in the Pemberton Township School District for more than three decades. He services as the assistant superintendent for business in the district from 1990 through 2001 and served as the superintendent from 2001 to 2006. He retired from the position in 2006 and moved on to serve as State Fiscal Monitor in New Jersey from 2007 to 2013, overseeing district operations for the Asbury Park, Pleasantville, Trenton and Camden School District.

Cowell will serve as superintendent until the board of education makes a permanent hire for the position. The district has already held community focus groups, asking members of the school community what they would like to see in the new superintendent. The board is expected to review applications and conduct interviews through the summer, with the hope of having a new superintendent in place for the fall.
