Moorestown High School boys track breaks records

MHS track Brandon Outlaw

Four hundred meter runner Brandon Outlaw, racing in an unseeded heat, placed 5th in 48.52 at the New Jersey Meet of Champions on Wednesday June 3 at Jost Field in South Plainfield.

He is currently ranked no. 1 in South Jersey, no. 12 in New Jersey and no. 23 U.S. Sophomore. He broke his own school record that he set with a 48.90 4th place effort at the NJ Group 3 Championships at Jost Field. Brandon broke the 75-year-old Moorestown High School record of 49.2 set by Joe Call in 1940.

Pole vaulter co-school record holder Kyle Loveland placed 8th at 13 feet 6 inches in the Meet of Champions with Moorestown’s first pole vault medal at the meet. He is ranked tied for no. 1 in South Jersey and tied for no. 5 in New Jersey. He is the co-record holder in the pole vault with TJ Hagan (2010, 14' 0").

The 4×100 relay of John Cedano, Brandon Outlaw, Melvin Sheppard and Skyler Clark also qualified for the New Jersey Meet of Champions in with a season best 43,48 at the Group 3 Championships. It was the 4th time in the last 6 season that the Moorestown boys 4×100 has qualified.

Also at the Group 3 meet, a new school record was established in the 4×800 relay. The new record of 8:06.86 was set by Harrison Morris, Diego Arvelo, Jack Ballenger and Kevin Fox. It broke the previous mark of 8:08.6 from 1982. The relay placed 9th in NJ Group 3 Championships, just missing a Meet of Champions qualifying mark by 1.2 seconds.

MHStrack 1

The Moorestown boys track team competed at the South Jersey Group 3 Sectional Championships at Central Regional High School in Bayville. Kyle Loveland (junior) won the Sectional Championship in Pole Vault with a vault of 14 feet, tying the school record set by TJ Hagan in 2010.

Kevin Fox (sophomore) and Harrison Morris (junior) each qualified in 3 events — the 800 meters, 1600 meters and 4×800 relay. Joining them on the relay are Diego Arvelo (sophomore) and Jack Ballenger (freshman). The team’s time of 8:11.84 was Moorestown’s fastest time since 1982. The 4×100 relay of John Cedano (senior), Brandon Outlaw (sophomore), Melvin Sheppard (junior) and Skyler Clark (junior) advanced with a season best time of 44.14. Sheppard also advanced in the 100 meters while Outlaw qualified in the 400 meters.

All of these athletes advanced to the NJ Group 3 Championships that will be held at South Plainfield High School.

Running a time of 3:28.29, its fastest since 2004, the Moorestown 4×400 relay of Kevin Fox, Jack Ballenger, Brandon Outlaw and Zion Howard (sophomore) just missed advancing to the state championship meet by 0.25 seconds.

On April 28, the Moorestown Boys Track fell to Pennsauken 77, Moorestown 63, but achieved some great victories. Moorestown winners were: Kyle Boyle-Loveland won the pole vault with a county best vault of 13 feet; Eli Etienne won the discus; Joe Salera took the shot put; Harrison Morris was first in the 3200 meters; Kevin Fox won the 800 meters; Brandon Outlaw took first in the 400 meters; and Diego Arvelo won the 1600 meters.
