Students at Elizabeth Haddon Elementary school jumped and hooped their way to a very successful event for the American Heart Association. Jump Rope For Heart/Hoops For Heart coordinator and physical education teacher Jennifer Wisniewski led her students through a series of fun, active games and stations designed to teach jump roping and basketball skills while raising money to fight heart disease and stroke. The students also learned the importance of physical activity, healthy eating and living tobacco-free to maintain a heart healthy life. Heart disease remains the #1 killer of Americans, and stroke is the 5th leading cause of death.
As the students raised funds throughout the event, Wisniewski kept the school’s donation a secret that was finally revealed at a post-event community meeting at the school on April 28. The top fundraising students, along with principal Gerry Bissinger and American Heart Association Regional Director Dawn Whitman, each held a poster with a number or symbol representing the school’s incredible efforts. The posters were arranged out of order, and Wisniewski had the participants change places until the actual number was revealed.
