Carol: Must See Now

On the way to the theater, a friend whose opinion I value, remarked that she wasn’t interested in seeing this film about “a woman walking for days in the desert, alone.” She compared it to Sandra Bullock floating around in space on her own. Well, the desert part happened but it was so much more than that. Reese Witherspoon is outstanding in the role of Cheryl Strayed, a real-life woman who did indeed walk 1100 miles along the Pacific Coast Trail. But the way it was depicted on the screen gave the viewer a close look at her life, from early childhood to her current situation and why she knew she had to do it. I thought that maybe this could go under the “chick-flick” category because it is inspirational but probably not so much to the men in the audience!

Phil: Worth the Matinee Price

A video diary of a woman hiking the Pacific Trail for some 1100 miles.Reminded me of Robert Redford’s tour de force,Lost, though in this film Reese Witherspoon meets other people, talks/thinks to herself, and flashes back with memories of years gone by. Somewhat of a coming-of-age film, though it’s subject was presumably in her 30s, when completing this journey.
