After reading of the vote to use the surplus to lower the taxes, I feel I must respond. In regards to the reported session, it would appear that Mr. Greg Newcomer is the only person on Town Council who has any sense. The remainder of said Council appears to be the same old rubber stamp group that we’ve had for years. I also note that the same issue contained the epistle according to Diane Allen in which she sings the praises of the Republican candidates. To be sure, the previous Democrat administration did have their faults, but at least they turned up at all the meetings. Nor do I ever recall having a telephone vote on an important item. Perhaps it is just my suspicious nature that I note that the resolution to use the surplus for tax relief just happened to occur right at election time. The Sun is to be congratulated for providing space for the candidates. That being said, I also noted the inserts provided by both parties and the additional insert from Ms. Allen and her “team.” The problem I have with the “tax relief” is there is never any mention of the human cost, especially as it seems to be the Republican thing to sing the praises of lower taxes. No mention was made of jobs cut or people affected. Locally, we got rid of dispatchers, privatized the trash collection and yet, the current Republican candidates proclaim kudos for bringing the new Town Hall and Library in under budget, which isn’t exactly the whole story. I did note that the stairs to the second floor could not be used; and can we overlook the debacle of the motto? It is so nice of them to take credit for all of this. Finally, I note that they cancelled the last meeting, as there was nothing of note to do. I guess the tank course on 2nd Street can be left alone for a little while longer. Can hardly wait for the next “plan” to save more tax dollars, maybe that once again they’ll do it on the backs of the employees. And bring more businesses to town, with no increase for parking. Nope, nothing to discuss.
