This fall the Department of Parks & Recreation is proud to again offer Irish Step Dancing for all ages. The Gibson School of Irish Dance has been a part of the Parks & Recreation line-up for over 15 years. Instructor Dave Gibson is a TCRG certified teacher who makes learning the traditional Irish dance fun. Gibson currently teaches in south Jersey, Philadelphia, Warminster and in local dance workshops throughout the area. Irish step dancing is great form of exercise for all ages. Students as young as six can register to participate.

The Irish Step Dancing classes offered through Parks & Recreation teach various forms of step dancing. Classes include soft shoe reels, jigs and slip jigs In addition to hard shoe dances such as treble jigs, hornpipes and treble reels. These dances are taught on a beginner level and increase in difficulty as the students develop.

The Gibson School of Irish Dance has participated in the Philadelphia St. Patrick’s Day parade, winning the Maureen McDade McGory award in 2008. As a part of the Irish Step Dancing class at the Department of Parks & Recreation, youth are offered the opportunity to perform in local competitions, perform in local shows and Irish Festivals and more. This is a great experience, which allows students to show off their skills in front of a huge televised audience. Other opportunities in the past have included pre-game shows for the Philadelphia 76ers and Phillies, as well as performances throughout southern New Jersey and the Philadelphia area. Students will also be given the opportunity to pursue Feisanna, Irish dance competitions.

Irish Step Dance began on Sept. 29 and runs for eight weeks at the Church Street Recreation Center on the third floor. Children, ages six and over, are encouraged to wear sneakers, t-shirts and shorts for practicing. Beginner classes are from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and advanced classes are from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Late registrations will be accepted. Register at www.moorestownrec.com.
