Mayors Column- 9/11 Tribute

Voorhees Mayor

On July 16, honored members of our Voorhees Township Police Department traveled to New York City to retrieve an artifact from the World Trade Center to pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack as part of the Memorial Garden Project at our Police Headquarters.

The artifact was given proper respect by being transported back to Voorhees by an entourage of police cars. With the help of the Voorhees Township Fire Department and one of their fire trucks, an American flag hung high over the entrance to Police Headquarters as the artifact arrived.

Almost 3,000 innocent people were killed on that fateful day in New York, including more than 700 from New Jersey. The Fire Department of New York suffered 343 fatalities, the largest loss of life of any emergency response agency in United States history. The Port Authority Police Department suffered 37 fatalities, the largest loss of life of any police force in United States history in a single day. The New York Police Department suffered 23 fatalities.

Police Chief Lou Bordi will oversee the building of the Memorial Garden in tribute to the victims of 9/11 including fallen law enforcement officers and fallen war veterans. In addition to the artifact from the World Trade Center, Chief Bordi has requested a sample of dirt from the Shanksville, PA crash site and a granite block from the Pentagon to serve as centerpieces for the Memorial. He will be forming a Memorial Garden Foundation to help raise funds for the project.

We will never forget!

The next show in our 2014 Summer Twilight Series is Thursday, Aug. 7 (rain date Thursday, Aug. 21) and will feature Almost Queen for the first time. This group succeeds in blending the vocal layering and studio precision that is a signature of the band with the energy and spectacle of a live stage production. Elaborate lighting effects and costumes aptly frame the seasoned musicians who step into these very large shoes to render an authentic “Queen experience.” The show is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. on the “Great Lawn” at Connolly Park.
