Entering its 11th year, the Voorhees Summer Twilight Series is bringing some wonderful acts to Connolly Park throughout the summer.
The first concert in the series took place June 19 and featured Bruce in the U.S.A.
“The June 19 concert was great,” Special Events Coordinator Michael Marchitto said. “The attendance was wonderful and people really seemed to enjoy the concert. And who wouldn’t enjoy it when you have a guy on stage who sounds exactly like Bruce Springsteen.”
Following in the footsteps of the June 19 concert, the Summer Twilight Series will continue on July 17 with Eaglemania, an Eagles cover band.
“This summer, we went with a collection of throwback concerts,” Marchitto said. “Based on the demographics of the town, we thought these shows would draw the most people.”
But while the concerts may provide a look into the past, Marchitto also understands these acts will appeal to the younger generation, too.
“They may be from the 70s, but almost everybody knows the Eagles and Bruce,” he said. “There was a very diverse crowd at the first concert and were looking forward to the same thing for the next one. These acts really allow parents and kids to come to a concert together and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
Unlike most concert series in the area that get mostly local acts, the Voorhees series goes out and gets acts that are known across the country. According to Marchitto, many of these acts come from Las Vegas, and he is very thankful to all the sponsors that make it possible to put on such great shows.
“We’ve been perfecting this process over the last 10 years,” he said. “We want to get acts that people are going to really want to come out and see. It’s great when you can get local acts, but people love seeing acts that they can sing along with, and we’re lucky enough to have three great performers this summer.”
Beside the June 19 and July 17 performances, there is also a performance scheduled for Aug. 7 that will feature Almost Queen, a Queen cover band.
Rounding out the Summer Twilight Series will be Movies in the Park on Sept. 13. Voorhees students will select the movie. They had the chance to vote from a selection of movies during the year.
“All in all, I think we have a very good set of events lined up for the summer,” Marchitto said. “This series has really evolved since we first started doing it and we continue to get better every year.”
The Summer Twilight Series events are held on the “Great Lawn” in Connolly Park at 7:30 p.m. The shows are free to the public, as is parking. There are also vendors at the shows with food and drinks available.
