Haddonfield resident appointed to U.S. Court of Appeals Third Circuit

Krause, Cheryl

The United States Senate confirmed Dechert partner Cheryl A. Krause, a resident of Haddonfield, to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Krause, 46, has been a partner in the firm’s litigation practice group since 2006. Krause was nominated to the bench by President Barack Obama in February.

“I am humbled and grateful to President Obama and the Senate, and in particular Senators Casey and Toomey, for this opportunity to return to public service and am deeply honored to join the esteemed bench of this Court. I look forward to continuing its traditions of excellence and collegiality,” said Krause, who is a 1989 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a 1993 graduate of Stanford Law School.

Krause previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and as a law clerk to the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy of the Supreme Court of the United States. As a litigator at Dechert, she has successfully represented major banking institutions, media companies, private equity firms and other companies in domestic and international government investigations, Securities and Exchange Commission proceedings, securities class actions, contract disputes and general commercial litigation. She has briefed and argued numerous appellate cases and has handled large-scale internal investigations in multiple jurisdictions.

While a partner at Dechert, Krause has contributed significantly to the Philadelphia community with her pro bono work, including her role as counsel to the Philadelphia Board of Ethics, her representation of disabled children in partnership with the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, and her leadership of Dechert’s partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Law School in a project that supervises law students in providing appeals support for indigent defendants.

“Cheryl will be an outstanding addition to the Third Circuit well, bringing both scholarship and a commitment to the rule of the law,” Dechert chairman Andrew J. Levander said. “She is an extraordinarily talented and smart lawyer who will be a great appellate judge. Consistent with our legacy of public service, Dechert is proud that another member of the firm has been selected to serve in high public office.”

She has also taught Evidence, CyberCrime and appellate advocacy at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and has published and lectured in many venues on the handling of internal investigations, developments in criminal law, sentencing issues, terrorism and combating computer crime. Before entering private practice, Krause was a lecturer at Stanford and Columbia Law Schools.
