The 2014 Mako Sharks of the Sunnybrook Swim Club got off to a great start to the summer with 23 swimmers qualifying for the Tri-County Swimming Championships and with a number of strong performances at an away meet against the Brookside Swim Club of Glassboro. In total, there were 37 performances qualifying for the Tri-County Meet.

Brookside won the meet 306 to Sunnybrook’s 248, but there were a number of very strong performances by Mako Sharks swimmers that portend a strong summer for Sunnybrook.
In the IM events, Holly Robinson took a very fast first place finish in the 11–12 girls 100 M, followed by Shawn Atzinger in second. Patrick Hartshorne placed second for the 11–12 boys 100 M. In the 13–14 girls 100 M IM, Annie Wixted claimed first, and Janey Galski third. Thomas Trasser was first for the boys in the 100 M IM, and Jed Fazler came in third. For the 15–18 boys, Sunnybrook was 1–2, with Timmy Runfola first, and Devin Nielsen second.
In the Medley Relays, four Sunnybrook teams came in first: the 11–12 girls team of Victoria Wilson, Holly Robinson, Julia Pierson and Shannon Raue. The 13–14 girls were first with the team of Janey Galski, Annabel Gorman, Annie Wixted and Julia Darmo. The 13–14 boys claimed the blue ribbons with the team of Peter Kohart, Kevin Fox, Jed Fazler and Thomas Trasser. And the fourth victorious MR team for Sunnybrook was the 15–18 boys team of Sam Zielinski, Devin Nielsen, Timmy Runfola and Matt Schaeffer.
Up and coming young swimmers were revealed starting with the 8 and under girls 25 M Freestyle with Meera Sholevar coming in second for Sunnybrook. For the 8 and under boys, Holden Zimmerman was second and Leo Hinshillwood was third in the 25 M event. For 9–10 girls, Catie Sharawyn was third and for the 9–10 boys, Dylan Bell claimed second in the 50 M event. Shannon Raue was first in the 11–12 girls 50 M Freestyle, and Sunnybrook claimed a rare tie for second, with Sunnybrook swimmers Victoria and Katerina Poulathas touching at the same identical time for second. T.J. Zimmerman came in third for the 11–12 boys. In the 13–14 girls 100 M event, Tara Thornton placed first and Julia Darmo third. For the 13–14 boys, Thomas Trasser came in second and Kevin Fox third. Finally, for the 15–18 boys, Matt Schaeffer was first in the 200 M Freestyle event.
Moving on to the Backstroke, Sunnybrook had Meera Sholevar in first and Alex Fazler in third for the 8 and under girls 25 M. William Feid placed second in the 8 and under boys 25 M backstroke. For the 9–10 girls, Mia Peper placed second, and Isabel Trzeciak and Isabella Delgado claimed the second tie of the day, both placing third. For the 9–10 boys, Ryan Gorman was third. The first sweep of the day was in the 11–12 girls 50 M Backstroke, with Demi Poulathas first, Victoria Wilson second, and Olivia Trasser third. For the 11–12 boys, James Santarpio was second. In the 13–14 girls, Annabel Gorman won the 50 M backstroke and Janey Galski placed third. Peter Kohart won first for the 13–14 boys in the 50 M Back. In the 15–18 girls 50 M back event, Catherine Wilson was third, and Matthew Phillips was second, and Sam Zielinski third in the boys 100 M Back.
Sunnybrook is strong with Breaststrokers, and placed 18 top-three finishers in the event. Alex Fazler was second and Jordan Chezem was third for the 8 and under girls in the 25 M Breaststroke. The “Gut It Out” award of the day was unofficially awarded to Sunnybrook swimmer Leo Hinshillwood. Leo dislodged his goggles upon his dive, swam the 25 M Breaststroke with his goggles on his chin, yet still placed first and qualified for Tri-County. Leo personified the Sunnybrook Mako Sharks “never quit” attitude on Saturday! Holden Zimmerman placed third for Sunnybrook in the 8 and under boys 25 M event. For the 9–10 girls 25 M Breast, Catie Shawaryn claimed first place and Isabella Delgado came in third. The second sweep of the day was again with the 11–12 girls, with Shannon Raue placing first, Julia Pierson second, and Shawn Atzinger third for the 50 M Breaststroke. Patrick Hartshorne was second and Jacob Delgado third for the 11–12 boys 50 M Breast. For the 13–14 Girls, Annie Wixted was first and Ava Setter third. The same pattern continued with the 13–14 boys, with Jed Fazler first, and Rohil Mediratta third in the 50 M Breaststroke. Danielle Scola came in third for the 15–18 girls Breaststroke, and the 15–18 boys finished the event with a 1–2 finish, Devin Nielsen in first and Matt Schaeffer in second.
In the Butterfly event, William Feid was second for the 8 and under boys, followed closely by Tre Hartsell in third, for the 25 M. In the 9–10 girls 25 M Fly, Sophia Sapnas won the blue ribbon with a first place finish. The third 1–2–3 sweep of the day was accomplished once again with the powerhouse 11–12 girl’s team. Holly Robinson was first, Demi Poulathas second, and Julia Pierson third in the 50 M Fly.
For the 11–12 boys 50 M Fly, James Santarpio placed first and David Hartshorne third. For the 13–14 girls, Annabel Gorman was first and Anna Buss second. The 13–14 boys had Peter Kohart placing second and Kevin Fox third in the 50 M Fly. Lauren Kohart placed third in the 15–18 girls 50 M fly and Timmy Runfola second for the 15–18 boys.
The meet ended with the very fast Free Relays. Sunnybrook claimed three first places, with the 11–12 girls team of Shannon Raue, Victoria Wilson, Julia Pierson, and Holly Robinson. The 13–14 girls were first with Annabel Gorman, Anna Buss, Tara Thornton and Annie Wixted, and the final first place of the day was with the 13–14 boys team of Peter Kohart, Rohil Mediratta, Jed Fazler and Thomas Trasser.
