Mayor’s Column- First Annual Junior Police Academy

Voorhees Mayor

Voorhees Township Police Chief Louis Bordi has authorized the First Annual Junior Police Academy to be held from July 21 through July 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This program is the first of its kind in Voorhees and will teach our young people from the age of 12 to 15 to appreciate and respect the duties and life of a police officer. The academy will also give the participants, who have dreams of becoming a police officer, a taste of police life.

The program will consist of 15 to 20 participants who will engage in physical fitness training, marching exercises, ceremonies such as raising the flag and classroom instruction. Participants will learn about our motor vehicle laws, criminal laws, crime scene investigation and firearms. There will even be a “mock car stop” where the cadets will act as police officers. All of the instructors will be Voorhees Township Police Officers and the cadets will report each day to our police station.

There is also a plan to take all cadets to the New Jersey State Police Museum.

Upon successful completion of the Academy, each cadet will receive a certificate at a graduation ceremony.

One parent or guardian will be required to attend an informational meeting prior to the start of the academy and to complete waiver forms.

Interested parents and applicants can contact Sgt. Daniel Stark at (856) 882–1104 (dstark@vtpd.com) or Lt. Dennis Ober at (856) 882–1110 (dober@vtpd.com).

The next show in our 2014 Summer Twilight Series will be on Thursday, July 17 (rain date Thursday, July 24) and will feature EagleMania-The World’s Greatest Eagles Tribute Band. EagleMania has dedicated itself to faithfully reproducing the sound of The Eagles. Their show consists of all of the Eagle’s greatest hits as well as some of the solo work of many of the individual members of the band such as Don Henly, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh. The show is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. on the “Great Lawn” at Connolly Park. For more information, visit www.voorheesnj.com.
