CONTACT Crisis Helpline of Moorestown Announces Scholarship Winners

Executive Director Theresa Tobey and Board President David Herron announce the winners of two $1,000 CONTACT scholarships: Sara Ostrowski of Cinnaminson, a TeenLine Volunteer, will be attending Richard Stockton College of NJ and majoring in Health Sciences with a Pre-Occupational Therapy track; Quinn Heath of Collingswood, a TeenLine Volunteer, planning to attend Temple University in Philadelphia and study Computer Science with a specialization in cyber security or computer forensics. TeenLine is a peer helpline staffed by high school students from both Camden and Burlington Counties. Sara attends Cinnaminson High School and Quinn is a student at Collingswood High School. There will be an award presentation at the CONTACT Board Meeting on July 17.

Active CONTACT volunteers and their family members were invited to apply for this scholarship designed to reward their dedication to serving others and provide assistance with higher education costs. An application included questions about honors and achievements received, extracurricular activities performed, other volunteer work and a 500-word essay on the topic, “How Would You Convince Someone to Volunteer at CONTACT?”

Executive Director Theresa Tobey stated, “It is an indication that our future is in good hands when young people such as Quinn and Sara take time from their busy schedules and make a commitment to help others in their communities.”

Volunteers serve in four program areas at CONTACT. Adults staff the 24/7 Crisis Helplines, make Reassurance care-calls to the frail elderly in our community and serve as Sexual Assault Services victim advocates; high school students staff the TeenLine. Volunteers are needed in all areas, but especially on the 24/7 Crisis Helplines. Volunteers gain valuable skills and fulfillment as they help people with immediate needs. No experience necessary. In-depth training provided in all areas, which includes active listening and crisis intervention skills.
