Olson Middle School celebrates Pi Day

Olson Middle School students and teachers celebrated Pi Day this year with the school’s fourth annual Pi Day assembly. In their homerooms during the week leading up to the big event, students participated in a “pi-dye” activity, and the resulting works of art now adorn classrooms and hallways.

At the assembly students first participated in a “pi” eating contest. The students loved working together on a team with other grade level children and of course the fact that things got a little messy!

Next, the children competed to see who could memorize the most digits of pi. Johnny Meale, the first prizewinner and seventh grader, memorized 140 digits. Cameron Dawkins, a sixth grader received second place, memorizing 89 digits and the third place winner, fifth grader Joey Pronchick memorized 51 digits. Eighth grader, Chryssoula Powell, memorized 44 digits to take fourth place.

By far, the most anticipated event of the assembly was called “Pi Your Teacher”. All week, students bought tickets for a chance to “pi” one of their teachers. During the assembly, the students were chosen to toss a whipped cream “pi” in the faces of their teachers as well as the principal, Sue Grosser. The final event invited the teachers to get in on the fun and was called “Pi Your Student,” where some eighth grade students got in on the mess.

A great time was had by all, and the math team at OMS looks forward to using the money raised throughout the event to fund a mathematics scholarship for four eighth grade students.

The math teachers would like to thank and recognize Murphy’s Market for their generous whipped cream donation.
