Cherokee High School “Project Graduation” planning underway

It may be cold outside, but the volunteers of Cherokee High School “Project Graduation” are busy planning this year’s graduation night event.

“This is a yearlong process of planning and fundraising”, president Rick Goldenberg said. “Our dedicated group of parents and alumni work hard to provide the kids with a great party that is drug and alcohol free.

“Our main goal is to keep everyone safe on graduation night.”

The event is a giant celebration for graduates to enjoy with their friends and classmates. The party features rides, inflatables, music, games, some surprise entertainment, great prizes, lots of food and a take home gift for all.

The event takes place at Chartwell Swim Club, whose facilities are generously donated by the Johnson family each year. The graduates have two pools, water slide, diving board and Water Park to enjoy.

“We strive to make the party a WOW each year,” said vice president and fundraising chair Sue Staton. “The budget is around $30,000, Although we are supported by many business sponsors, we have to ask our Cherokee families and former alumni to help with donations.

“We have the full support of the high school, but, unfortunately, receive no funding from them. We are already working on the 2015 event, but need the financial and volunteer support from the community to keep this event going year after year. We are looking for parents of underclass students to help out.”

The group’s next meeting is on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the North Media Center.
