Obituary: Joan Sweeney Maloney

Joan Sweeney Maloney, 85, died peacefully at home in her sleep on March 4.

Joan was born on March 28, 1928 in Worcester, Mass. She met her future husband James H. Maloney, Jr. in 1946. In 1950, Joan and Jim married and moved to West Chester, Pa.

Joan graduated from West Chester State Teachers College, and moved to Moorestown in the 1950’s. She lived first on Beacon Street, and then moved to Timberwyck Farm at 760 Garwood Road, as the family’s interest in horseback riding blossomed.

She became a successful businesswoman, founding the Alpha Country Day Nursery School, that evolved into the Moorestown Children’s School in 1989, which continues on Timberwyck Farm to this day. Joan loved children. Touching the lives of the thousands of children who attended her schools brought her great joy.

She was also a Girl Scouts Brownie troop leader and active in 4-H with her children. She was an avid reader, and had a keen interest in medicine. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, and her four children, Beth, Sue, Cris, and Lisa. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one sister, known as Jane Kirwan, of Barrington, R.I.

There will not be a public service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Easter Seals.
