Cherry Hill resident named Peer Counselor at Army and Navy Academy

Army and Navy Academy is proud to announce that Cherry Hill resident Remy Madarieta, Class of 2015, has been selected as a Peer Counselor for the 2013–2014 school year. He has been chosen through an annual survey administered to the entire Corps of Cadets.

The peer counseling team was developed because youth often turn to their friends or peers when they are experiencing problems. The peer counselors are trained in listening and support skills so they can effectively help their peers work through difficulties. They are also trained to know when a fellow cadet’s dilemma is such that it should be referred to an adult counselor.

“The benefits of a Peer Counseling Program are paramount and are based on the fact that youth often seek out their peers when they are experiencing some frustration, worry or concern,” counselor Christy Brown said. “Peer counseling teaches cadets decision-making skills to help combat negative peer pressure and provides cadets with communication skills to understand others, reduce loneliness, and support academic and personal achievement.”
