Cooper River Park, the crown jewel of the Camden County Park System, has been named the top Regional Environmental Program of the Year by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
Each year, the DVRPC recognizes the region’s best in environmental projects, transportation, economic development and land use. The DVRPC officers will recognize Cooper River Park on Dec. 12, during their annual board retreat.
“Camden County residents already know that Cooper River Park is a special place, but this award proves that this park land is a destination not only within the region but throughout the state,” County Freeholder Jeffrey Nash said. “Since 1935, people from all over South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania have converged upon Cooper River Park to experience its wide array of recreational facilities, regular events, cultural heritage, and spectacular views. And with over $5 million from the open space trust fund committed by the Freeholder Board for additional improvements, Cooper River will continue to be utilized as a hub for regional recreation and leisure.”
Cooper River Park is home to a variety of passive and active recreational activities and is a national and international competitive rowing venue. In addition, a world sailing champion is a member of the Cooper River Yacht Club and thousands of visitors a day frequent the park to run, bike and take in the scenic beauty.
“This year’s Regional Excellence Award winners cover a wide spectrum of interests that play key roles in moving our region to a more sustainable, economically competitive future,” DVRPC Executive Director Barry Seymour said. “DVRPC congratulates each award winner and thanks them for their commitment to making the Greater Philadelphia area an even better place to live and work.”
The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s mission is to improve transportation, promote smart growth, protect the environment and enhance the economy in the counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania; and Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Mercer in New Jersey.
