UPDATE: Camden County Code Blue extended through the morning of Dec. 11

Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services, advises municipalities that Camden County is under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory.

The Camden County Health Officer issued the severe weather advisory for Camden County effective from 6:00 p.m. Monday night, Dec. 9 until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, Dec. 11. The latest forecast obtained by Camden County predicts heavy snow fall starting around 7 a.m. and ending in the early afternoon. The low temperatures will be between 28 and 32 degrees and winds will be about 10 to 20 miles per hour from the northwest.

“After yesterday’s unexpected snow accumulation the cold, wet, weather will continue and will be extreme for the morning hours.” Rodriguez said. “It is imperative to find shelter during these events and not be exposed to the outdoor elements for a prolonged period of time.”

When the Camden County Health Officer declares a Severe Weather Advisory, municipalities with homeless populations, situational homeless or transient populations are expected to activate their Code Blue response plan to accommodate their immediate needs. This winter weather watch will bring heavy snow into the area for the next 24 hours.

The Camden County Health Department and the Office of Emergency Management have worked with each municipality to ensure they have the proper resources to respond to these severe weather situations as part of their individual Code Blue plans. Each municipality has identified its own location to accommodate those in their community seeking shelter from the severe weather.

“During these weather emergencies, we encourage everyone to check on elderly or handicapped relatives and neighbors that live alone,” Rodriguez said. “It is important that the most vulnerable among us are not left without heat or electricity.”

Persons seeking warming center locations should contact their local municipality.
