Commissioners vote to support green efforts in borough

Borough commissioners voted to support green efforts with the passing of a resolution at the Oct. 22 meeting.

The resolution endorses the adoption of green building practices for civic, commercial and residential buildings throughout the borough.

“None of this is mandated, but it strongly encourages it,” Mayor Jeff Kasko said in reference to the resolution.

The resolution implements a “Green Building Policy” for the borough, which will allow for the consideration of incorporating green building measures into the design, construction, operation and maintenance of municipal buildings and faculties, and also encourages green design for commercial and residential buildings.

Commissioner Neal Rochford said that energy audits are being performed through Sustainable Haddonfield for all municipal buildings.

Answering questions from the public, Kasko added that the borough has considered solar panels for buildings, such as the Haddonfield Public Library and Haddonfield Memorial High School.

However, he explained that it would be “tough” to put solar panels on the library.

Borough administrator Sharon McCullough said that solar panels on Haddonfield Memorial High School would be equally unfeasible with the building’s roof unable to sustain the weight of the panels.

In addition, commissioners passed a resolution to endorse the community vision adopted by Sustainable Haddonfield.

Following the meeting, Kasko said the borough is awaiting the findings of the energy audit before any changes are made.

“We’ll see what the audit says and talk to our engineer about using green technology,” Kasko said.
