Shamong resident Nicholas Emery named semifinalist

Thomas Stone Heritage Academy is proud to announce that Nicholas Emery was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Emery was one of 16,000 students notified that he has qualified as a semifinalist. Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT selection index scores (critical reading, mathematics and writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. He will now compete to advance to finalist standing in the competition.

A senior from Shamong, Emery also received the College Board AP Scholar Award based on outstanding performance on the 2013 Advanced Placement Exams. One of Emery’s interests outside of school is model UN, having attended conferences hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. On September 26 he will lead his club, the American Homeschool Model UN Club (AHMUNC), in their first ever model UN conference through which he hopes to spark an interest in the homeschooling community about global issues and how nations can work together to create solutions.

Emery spends his volunteer time working with and raising funds for special needs children, coaching students to improve their writing skills and raising awareness about the need for gluten-free products in food banks. He hopes to study economics, English literature and Russian in college.
