UPDATE: Cherry Hill East to open as scheduled

Cherry Hill High School East students will return to a normal schedule tomorrow morning.

Superintendent Maureen Reusche released a statement on the district’s website following the evacuation that led to early dismissal following a threat found in a restroom in the school:

Earlier today, Sept. 23, a threatening message was discovered in a restroom at Cherry Hill High School East; this prompted an investigation by the Cherry Hill Police Department and our district security staff.

Lockdown procedures were initiated; after consultation with the responding authorities, a decision was made to evacuate the building and dismiss students approximately 15 minutes early.

The Cherry Hill Police Department completed a thorough search of the building and declared that the school is safe to open tomorrow as scheduled.

Students should report to their Period F classroom tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. to collect any belongings that were left there prior to the evacuation.

Students will then proceed to Period D and continue with the school day. The deadline for homework assignments originally due on Tuesday, Sept. 24, is extended to the next time the class meets. Likewise, tests originally scheduled for tomorrow will be administered the next time the class meets.

We recognize that a disruption of this nature is unsettling for some of our students. As always, our counselors, teachers, and other staff are here to provide support.

The investigation is continuing and the responsible party or parties will face disciplinary measures and, perhaps, criminal charges.

If your child has any information about this threatening message, please encourage him or her to come forward. All information will be kept confidential.

Thank you to the Cherry Hill Police Department for responding and providing resources to ensure that a thorough investigation could occur in time for us to open school on Tuesday.

Finally, I want to thank all of the East students and staff for their cooperation during the lockdown, evacuation, and early dismissal.
