Fire department in process of hiring public information officer

The Moorestown Fire Department №1 is in the process of hiring a public information officer, hoping to make an official announcement at the board of commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

“We felt we needed something more official,” Fire District Administrator Chris Chesner said, adding the position is non-compensated.

Chesner said he would normally act as the point contact for the media or community. This is the first time the board of commissioners created and approved a resolution for the position.

The three divisions within the department — division of fire prevention, administration division and operations — would all work together, sharing information when needed.

The PIO would “funnel” the media or residents to the proper contact or would answer any questions on the spot.

According to the job descriptions, the PIO is responsible for “maintaining positive relations between the public and the fire department, as well as communicate with the media, maintain the department website and assist in coordinating fire department events.”

“If there is a news release for a fire investigation, the PIO would comment on it or lead them to the right person,” he said.

“As long as they are ready to provide immediate photos and information that will benefit the department, I am OK with it,” Fire Marshal Bob Worrell said.

According to Chesner, the fire department began publishing minutes, agendas and budgets on its website long before it became mandated by the state.

With the use of technology and its development increasing, by keeping the website and Facebook page constantly updated, Chesner said it would help the department become more transparent.

“I think the department as a whole sees a need for it,” Chesner said.

Assistant Fire Marshal Ken Schweiker spent the past 14 years with the department, starting as a volunteer. He was hired as the assistant fire marshal in 2007.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea for the department. It’s something that we need, and I think it will benefit everybody by having a designated public information officer,” he said.

The next Board of Fire Commissioners meeting is on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Emergency Services Building, 261 W. Main St.
