Volunteer Center of Burlington County announces scholarship winners

The Volunteer Center of Burlington County has awarded six college scholarships totaling $22,000 to six Burlington County high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service, leadership and academic achievement.

Two students, Matthew Delancy of Medford (Shawnee) and Brenna Fallows of Moorestown (Moorestown) received the Volunteer Center’s top award of $5,000, during a check presentation ceremony held Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the Main Branch of the Burlington County Library in Westampton.

Three other students, Matthew O’Rorke of Medford (Shawnee); Colleen Aydolette of Edgewater Park (Holy Cross); and, Melissa McIntosh of Willingboro (Willingoro), were presented $3,000 checks. Brett Jacobs of Evesham (Cherokee) was unable to attend the ceremony, but will also receive a $3,000 check.

The students were selected by a review committee which evaluated 56 applications representing 18 high schools in Burlington County. Since 2009, the Volunteer Center now has awarded $53,500 in scholarship money.

Presiding over the event was Joseph Laufer, a former recipient of the Volunteer Center’s Community Service Award, for whom the scholarship was named. The Haines Family Foundation is a generous contributor to the scholarship program.

“These are outstanding young people who have displayed not only a lengthy record of participation in many community service activities, but also an ability and willingness to organize and lead,” said Laufer. “In addition, all of these young people have stellar academic records.”

“We’re extremely proud of them, and pleased to have the opportunity to assist them as they move into the next phase of their academic careers,” he added.
