Burlington County encourages residents to recycle their shoes on June 9

Today, Burlington County Freeholder Director Joe Donnelly announced an exciting collaboration with ShoeBox Recycling for this year’s Annual Earth Fair in Historic Smithville Park on Sunday, June 9.

Residents, families, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to bring gently used, paired, men’s, women’s and kids shoes to the Earth Fair’s Sustainable Living Tent with the hope that the message, ‘worn is not worn out’ will resonate throughout the county.

With over 300 million pairs of shoes being thrown away each year, Burlington County wants to promote reuse of gently used shoes that would otherwise end up in local landfills. ShoeBox Recycling will accept all types of shoes except: roller skates, roller blades, ice skates, snow boots, and firemen boots. Shoebox Recycling will provide an environment friendly alternative to throwing away unwanted but still usable sneakers, sandals, cleats, running shoes, dress shoes, and heels.

“It is important that we continue to find new and convenient ways for our county, and its residents, to improve the environment,” Donnelly said. “Everyone has extra shoes in their closet and now we have an opportunity to make a great choice to put those shoes to reuse instead of in landfills.”

The Annual Earth Fair takes place on Sunday June 9, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Historic Smithville Park located at Smithville Road in Eastampton, NJ. Admission is free. For more information call 609–265–5858 or visit the county website at www.co.burlington.nj.us
