Shawnee’s Academic Hall of Fame to induct second class June 3

Shawnee High School’s Academic Hall of Fame will induct its second class Monday, June 3 as part of the school’s Academic Awards.

This year’s inductions will include a decorated combat veteran, a professor who focuses on women’s gender and sexuality studies, a pediatrician who specializes in improving the lives of children with chronic conditions, and an Emmy Award winning character designer for Cartoon Network.

These four outstanding individuals will join the six other individuals currently in the hall.

Being honored and inducted is recently retired Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Abbott of the United States Army.

Abbott graduated from Shawnee in 1985 and continued his education at West Point Military Academy graduating in 1989.
Also being honored is Sara Dettinger Martino, who is a 1995 graduate of Shawnee High School. After getting her Ph.D. in counseling psychology, Dr. Martino has served as an associate professor at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and is serving as the Coordinator of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies minor.

Honoree Dr. Chris Feudtner is a pediatrician, epidemiologist, historian, and ethicist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, who focuses on improving the lives of children with complex chronic conditions and their families.

He is the director of the Department of Medical Ethics and holds the Steven D. Handler Endowed Chair of Medical Ethics at CHOP, where he is also an attending physician and director of research for the Pediatric Advance Care Team, which provides palliative, end-of-life and bereavement services.

Phil Rynda is also being honored. After graduating from Shawnee in 1999, Rynda attended the School of Visual Arts in New York.

While a college student, he served as lead animator on a game for Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance System.
