Council makes headway with field sponsorship program

With only a week since the start of the athletic and recreational fields sponsorship program, $20,000 has been raised. The township already has received approximately $9,000.

Township manager Scott Carew said the township and athletic clubs split the proceeds after costs related to the program are covered. The program offers annual banner sponsorship opportunities as well as field naming rights.

According to Carew, the township has made close to $9,000 after the cost of the banners were paid for and the sports groups received their cut. He said the township collected the money for the banners, and volunteers from the athletic and recreational organizations are helping solicit the funds.

The money would be used for maintenance of other recreation department service costs, Carew said.

So far, interested parties have purchased 20 banners and a majority has selected John Pryor Park for display.

Carew said he is hopeful the township will be able to raise close to $100,000 in field naming rights and between $50,000 to $75,000 for banners.

Field banners for 2013 (June to Dec. 1) are $400 for most fields and $600 for the turf fields. Costs for 2014 banners are still being determined, according to Taylor Design Group representatives.

Field naming rights range from five- to 10-year terms with a minimum bid of $5,000 for five years on smaller fields and a minimum of $35,000 for 10 years for one of the turf fields.

In other meeting news:

• As a part of a cost-saving initiative, Carew announced the township newsletter would no longer be mailed to Moorestonians.

Carew said it would save the township approximately $9,000 a year in printing costs. However, the newsletter will still be available online and to anyone who requests a printed copy.

• The Town Hall construction is also moving along.

Carew said the framing of the building is almost complete and currently there are “no significant change orders on the horizon.”

• The field projects are also being finished with the lacrosse association getting its first of many games on the Wesley Bishop turf field on Saturday, May 18.

The next council meeting is set for Monday, June 10, in Moorestown High School’s IT Room.
