Steve Weinstein stepped down as president of the Haddonfield Board of Education at the March 21 board meeting. Steve has led the district in numerous long-lasting and far-ranging changes since assuming the presidency in May 2007. Current board members would like to highlight just a few of the initiatives he has spearheaded.
- Took over as president after two straight budget defeats, reversed the trend and opened up the budget process to public debate and transparency by setting up the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC.)
- Led the development of a program to obtain tuition students at the middle school and high school, which brought in $1.5 million since its inception, saving each taxpayer over $345.
- Participated in two successful contract negotiations with the HEA that maintained fair labor contracts but contained costs.
- Created a community technology committee to take advantage of expertise that could inform and assist the district’s technology program.
- Oversaw development of the Drexel and Rowan University partnerships, which provide college level courses and credit for our high school students.
- Recruited two superintendents to the district and helped manage their smooth transitions.
- Created an alterative revenue committee, to explore other sources of funding, and brought in a Rutgers MBA team to assist in reviewing budget options.
- Led the community discussion on the possible acquisition of Bancroft.
- Worked with community leaders to change the culture in town around drugs and alcohol, and supported adoption of the 24/7 policy, which at the time was consistent with administrative and court decisions.
- Worked consistently to maintain a unified board.
- Spearheaded the drive to upgrade the high school athletic fields.
- Saw Haddonfield Memorial High School achieve national ranking and Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School to be named a state reward school.
- Oversaw a successful flourishing of the Haddonfield Education Trust.
On behalf of all board members, we thank Steve for his tireless efforts on behalf of students, faculty, staff and administrators, board members and all residents of Haddonfield. His leadership has enriched us all and will be missed.
