The program is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Learn about and listen to stories about this American heroine. Sklaroff discovered Gratz when she became a docent at the Rosenbach Museum & Library, which owns a lovely portrait of Gratz by Thomas Sully.

Fascinated by the Rosenbach’s portrait, she researched the Gratz family, using the more than 2,000 documents available to scholars in various libraries.

To bring her findings to the public, she began speaking to local groups and also has been writing a blog for three years called “Rebecca Gratz & 19th-Century America.” The presentation deals with the ways that the romantic stories told about Rebecca contributed to the success of her pioneering effort in religious education at the Hebrew Sunday School Society.
