The Camden County Freeholder Board’s Clean Communities Program and the state’s Delaware River Basin Dash for the Trash will hold a volunteer community cleanup at Camden’s Pyne Poynt Park on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The park is located at 7th and Erie Street in Camden.
The cleanup is being held in conjunction with AmeriCorps Week, which aims to promote an awareness of environmental stewardship by bringing communities together to clean up and protect our natural resources.
“The Freeholder Board is proud to partner with neighbors and community volunteers who want to improve this park for the children of Camden City,”Freeholder Jeffrey L. Nash, liaison to the Camden County Parks Department said. “This park plays a vital role in the North Camden neighborhood and is an asset for the County and the City.”
Volunteers are encouraged to dress warmly, wear sturdy boots or shoes and bring a water bottle. On site there will be an ample supply of tools, trash bags, and coffee and donuts will be provided for all participants.
In October, Camden County was awarded $750,000 from the New Jersey Green Acres Open Space fund to refurbish Pyne Poynt Park. The improvements include reconstruction of playing fields, basketball courts, accessible pathways, fencing and lighting at the park. The project will also include increased drainage and stormwater management at the 15-acre park that is located where the Cooper River meets the Delaware.
“Pyne Poynt Park is the home to the North Camden Little League and the Camden Youth Soccer Club, which combined serve thousands of children from the neighborhood,” Nash said. “These public service projects are important to preserve the County’s greenspaces and enhance our park land.”
The Green Acres Funding is also going toward the creation of a continuous public waterfront and greenway trail along the banks of the Delaware River. When completed, the 2.8 mile trail will provide residents with new recreational opportunities, and will link with a trail network throughout the county.
