Mayor’s column: Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club

Last week, I wrote about the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club’s value to the Voorhees community. We are fortunate in Voorhees to have another such group that works tirelessly and passionately for wonderful causes. They are known as the Voorhees Rotary Dinner Club.

Founded in 1963, the Voorhees Rotary Dinner Club has 15 members and two charter members, Jerry Klein and Steve Micciche. The group lives by the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Over the years, its members have raised money to donate iPads for the Weisman Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital, and donated funds to help a local young man who is fighting melanoma. The group has provided dinners for those staying at the Gift of Life House while their family members await organ transplants. The club donated funds for holiday gifts for children in the care of the Division of Youth and Family Services and provided gift bags for elderly residents and local senior facilities through their “Adopting-A-Grandparent” program.

The club has raised funds for the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists our brave men and women returning from active military duty. They have provided bullet proof vests for the Gibbsboro Police Department, backpacks and school supplies for local children in need and dictionaries for local third graders. The club funded the training of a disability dog for a local resident and helped finance a club house for the little league.

These caring members have been an active part of the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation, recently donating $10,000 to install Teen Centers in hospitals to improve the quality of life of teens with life-threatening illnesses.

I was honored to be their guest speaker at a recent meeting and enjoyed a wonderful evening seeing old friends and making new friends.

The Voorhees Rotary Dinner Club is part of Rotary International, the world’s first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members and 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary Club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training and promote peace and help eradicate polio.

The Voorhees Rotary Dinner Club meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Filomena’s in Berlin. For more information about the club visit www.voorheesdinnerrotaryclub.org or email the club at info@voorheesrotarydinnerclub.org.
