Planting spans generations in Cherry Hill
On July 3, more than a dozen 14-year olds from the Katz Cherry Hill’s Jewish Community Center (JCC) Camps in Medford engaged in meaningful community service as they worked side by side with seniors from Spring Hills Cherry Hill Luxury Assisted Living Community on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, on the site of the former Sheraton Poste Hotel.
With plenty of chilled water to refresh them on a hot summer day, the kids and seniors planted fruits and vegetables that would be used in the kitchen by Executive Chef Norman Weiler in preparing dishes for the seniors.
Julie Warshauer, Children and Family Coordinator of the JCC said, “This experience had double the benefits for the kids from camp. They not only had a great opportunity to be involved in an intergenerational program with the residents, they were also gardening and sustaining the environment. It was the perfect example of Tikun Olam, making the world a better place.”
Emily Sohn, 14, of Lumberton said, “It gave me lots of insight into nature and how easy it is to grow plants. It was great how the seniors taught us.” And, her friend Rachel Smith, 14, of Cherry Hill, said, “This is amazing. We get to socialize with older people. It’s just fun and makes you feel good, too.”
