Don’t miss Relay for Life in Voorhees

Mayor’s Message: Michael Mignogna

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being the Mayor of Voorhees Township is having the opportunity to witness and be a part of so many wonderful causes. I am proud to announce that the Voorhees community is at it again.

Relay for Life of Voorhees will be held at the football stadium of Eastern Regional High School from 7 p.m. on Friday, June 8, until 6 a.m. on June 9.

The relay is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, picnic, dance, play games and take turns circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. The event opens as cancer survivors lead the way around the track and are honored with a Survivor Lap. As the sun begins to set, the warm glow of hundreds of luminaria light the field in an emotional silent ceremony. Each bag lit is in honor of a loved one who won the fight against cancer or in remembrance of a special someone who lost their battle. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

Started in 1985, Relay for Life began with one man who circled around a track for 24 hours, raising $27,000. This year, Relay for Life has grown to more than 5,000 communities and more than 25 countries worldwide. Money raised will fight cancer by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures and fighting back.

We have all been touched in some way by cancer’s devastation. Join us at the Relay for Life of Voorhees on June 8 and June 9!

• The Voorhees Town Center Farmer’s Market will be held every Saturday through Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon at the Special Events Plaza outside the entrance to town hall. The market features Jersey fresh fruits, vegetables, pasta, honey, wine and much more from vendors throughout the Delaware Valley.

• At the next meeting of the Voorhees Environmental Commission on June 12 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, John Eppensteiner III, a water-quality specialist from New Jersey American Water, will be giving a presentation about water treatment, distribution, quality, rates, conservation and watershed protection. Our environmental commission meets the second Tuesday of every month. Among other roles, this commission reviews certain development applications and provides advisory opinions and guidance to the governing body about potential environmental issues and concerns. The meetings are open to the public.

• The first show of our 2012 Summer Twilight Series is Thursday, June 14 (rain date June 17) and will feature the return of Bruce in the USA, a tribute band to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. This high-energy musical experience has drawn thousands to our Summer Twilight Series in its two prior appearances. The late great Clarence Clemens called it the greatest Springsteen tribute he’d even seen.
