Police: Medford man locks disabled dad in bathroom, takes off with his car

An 18-year-old Medford man stands accused of locking his disabled father in a bathroom because he wanted the keys to the family car, and his father refused, Medford police said.

Tyler Medina is alleged to have taken his 45-year-old father’s Medic Alert bracelet and cell phone to keep his father from contacting authorities for help, police said.

The victim is confined to a wheelchair, reports said.

Police say they responded to a call of a man in a medical emergency on Monday, March 5, at 3:06 p.m. Then, a second call came in of some kind of situation at the Branch Street house.

Police said the 45-year-old victim complained of chest pains that started before he was locked in the bathroom. He said his son wouldn’t help him until he gave him the car keys.

The young man did call for medical assistance after his father gave him the keys, according to police.

Police say Medina resisted arrest and tried to flee the scene. They say he was subdued with the help of pepper spray.

Medina’s father was transported to Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly with cardiac problems. His condition is not immediately known.

Medina was remanded to the Burlington County Jail on $300,000 bail on charges of neglect of a disabled person, criminal restraint, theft, harassment and resisting arrest, police said.
